Bobcat Athletics Lose Long-Time Friend

Former Faculty Athletic Rep Bob Oakberg passes away
Dr. Robert Oakberg, Montana State University's long-time Faculty Athletics Representative, passed away in Bozeman on June 15 after a brief illness.
"Bob Oakberg was such a fixture in the Fieldhouse that it will be difficult not seeing him regularly," said MSU Director of Athletics Peter Fields. "Even after his tenure as FAR ended he remained interested and involved. He was dedicated to helping students at this University, and so many student-athletes benefited from his passion. Our thoughts are with his family and the countless friends he leaves, but MSU and Bobcat Athletics are far better for his work."
A native of Elko, Nevada, and product of Couer d'Alene (Idaho) High School, Oakberg played football at Stanford, earning his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from that University. After teaching at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, N.Y.) and Bristol University (Bristol, England) before beginning a three-and-a-half decade career at MSU.
He joined the engineering faculty at the Bozeman campus in 1977, was involved in all phases of that department's operations. Oakberg became the school's FAR in 1993-94 until his retirement in 2011. In that capacity he helped facilitate a vast range of compliance and academic issues, and was involved with the Big Sky Conference, as well. Bobcat Athletics had previously named its All A's Banquet for Oakberg for his work with and on behalf of MSU student-athletes.
A memorial service for Oakberg is scheduled for the Stadium Club of Bobcat Stadium on Friday, June 21, at 4 pm.
