Rick Vancleeve was a really good player on really good teams
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2013 season on August 29 against Monmouth. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set are welcome to blamberty@msubobcats.com.

JP Flynn, OG: JP Flynn may have redshirted last season, but you wouldn't have known it by how frequently his name came up in conversations with Bobcat coaches. The freshman from Iowa – whose brother Rob Ash recruited to Drake and employed as an MSU football intern last year – continued to turn heads in the spring, and enters this fall in competition for starting honors at guard. His versatility and size – not to mention talent and skill – could lead him outside to tackle if needed.
Spotlight Player: When the discussion of great Bobcats of the 1970s begins, it doesn't take long for the name Rick Vancleeve to surface. Originally from Great Falls, Vancleeve anchored a terrific Bobcat defensive line from 1976-78. He was a two-time First Team All-Big Sky selection and was considered an apt successor to such great Bobcat DTs as Ron Warzeka and Bill Kollar. He earned First Team All-Big Sky honors as a junior and senior, and was a great among greats on those fantastic MSU defenses.
Through the years: Chuck Dallum (1956), Bill Borders (1957-58), Ron Frank (1959-60), Willard Weaver (1961), Cliff Hysell (1964-65), Ed Dean (1967), Rocky Tope (1968-70), Dusty Birkenbuel (1971-74), Rick Vancleeve (1975-78), Tony Woolery (1979), Dave Thompson (1980-83), Jon Gass (1984), Shawn Malone (1985), John Sain (1987), John Schaaf (1988), Marty Milton (1989-92), John McDonnell (1993-94), Quinn Taylor (1995), Linn Lucas (1996), Jamie Amicarella (1999-2000), Demola Obadina (2002), Ernest King (2003), Lou Saucedo (2004-06, 2008), Andrew Vernalic (2009-11), JP Flynn (2012-)
