91 days until kickoff, and the number 91 holds some great memories for Cat fans
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2013 season on August 29 against Monmouth. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set are welcome to blamberty@msubobcats.com.
#91
Robert Wilcox, DE: A transfer from Grambling who will sit out the 2013 season to comply with NCAA rules. The Bobcat coaching staff considers him a highly-talented interior lineman who will fortify the defensive front as soon as he's eligible to play. He is from Frisco, Tex.
Player Spotlight: Watching Roger Cooper chase down an opposing running back from the weak side was like seeing a lion track prey on the plains of the Serengeti. It was thrilling and exhilarating, with a touch of terror mixed in. Cooper was a big, athletic player who looked every bit of his prep hurdle champion pedigree while playing football. Cooper earned First Team All-Big Sky honors three times, and was the 2004 Big Sky Defensive MVP. Roger Cooper He earned Second Team All-America honors as a senior. Cooper is currently an assistant coach for Mike Kramer at Idaho State.
Notable #91s in the Bobcat Past: Picking between Roger Cooper and Tex Sikora is Bobcat by the Numbers' version of a steel cage death match. Cooper gets the nod because of individual accolades, but it's hard to over-state Sikora's importance to the 1984 National Championship team. The two-time Second Team All-Big Sky choice logged 15 tackles-for-loss (including playoff games) as a junior during the championship run, then after moving to end as a senior recorded 11 more, including 10 sacks. He was renowned for his work in the weight room and the resulting prodigious strength.
Through the years: Tex Sikora (1982-85), Kevin Wolf (1986-88), Mark Sims (1989-93), Aaron Nava (1996), Nathan Schmidt (1999), Roger Cooper (2000-04), Joe Schreibeis (2005-09), Odin Coe (2011-12)
Bonus Tidbit: The Bobcat program has had many great brother acts during the years, but none of them have shared a moment more memorable than Joe Schreibeis (#91, 2005-09) had with his brother Caleb. The Schreibeis boys combined to cause and recover a fumble on a kickoff in a 2009 game.
