Bobcat Football's final installment on "DESTRUCTION" according to DeNarius McGhee
A pack of lions is called a “pride.” A group of wolves is a “pack.” The question is, “what does one call a group of Bobcats?” Although they typically travel alone, the Bobcat population flirts with one million, as they are a sly, smart creature. When Bobcats do travel together, they can be referred to as a clowder, pounce or destruction.
Following the success of the 2012 Bobcat Football season, it makes sense that this group of Bobcats is certainly a Destruction.
We sat down with nine of our football student-athletes and asked each of them, “what does Destruction mean to you?”
DeNarius McGhee - Quarterback - 2012 Big Sky Conference Offensive MVP/First Team
DESTRUCTION, to me, signifies dominance. It is exterminating the will and hope of an opponent. This is not a motto. This is a way of life.
Brad Daly - Defensive End - 2012 All-Big Sky Conference Second Team
The word DESTRUCTION carries different meanings and significane to everyone in today's world. While most associate negative undertones with the mention of destruction, I choose to view it as a necessary evil. DESTRUCTION is accompanied by opportunity.
When forest fires demolish natural landscapes, their destruction is followed by lush green re-growth. When injuries occur on the football field, other young men are given the chance to showcase their talents to a stadium full of crazed and passionate fans. When offensive coordinators are stuck in third and long with no other option apart from a pass, the front seven are giving the opportunity to charge up the field, blow through the opposition and the destroy the opposing quarterback.
The DESTRUCTION of the opponent's dream is inevitable with each stepping stone to a national championship. For a team to achieve their own dreams, sometimes you're destructing the dreams of others.
Rory Perez - Kicker - 2012 All-Big Sky Conference Honorable Mention
DESTRUCTION in the eye of the Bobcat results from everyone on the team executing their assignment, working together to supress or drive the crowd and destroy the opposition until nothing is left. The opponent is defeated. We are victorious. That is DESTRUCTION.
Cody Kirk - Running Back - 2012 All-Big Sky Conference Second Team
DESTRUCTION is simple. It is the complete domination of our opponent. However, to reach the point of destruction, it takes hours upon hours of work and energy. It is not something that just appears overnight. It is the culmination of our efforts over months and even years and work. To build a brotherhood, you must face adversity. You must handle the most difficult of trials. You must bleed together. You must sweat together. You must cry together. And when you do all of this, a family that can handle anything has been established. THAT is DESTRUCTION.
Michael Foster - Linebacker - 2012 All-Big Sky Conference Honorable Mention
Destruction: the concept of damage to object, system or being.
What causes DESTRUCTION? The 'No Question' demeanor of relentless pursuit to exceed expectations and disown disappointment, while feeding the insatiable hunger to defy your limitations. Anyone can have a dream, but when the dream is no longer enough it's your responsibility to create the memory.
Steven Bethley - Safety - 2012 All-Big Sky Conference Honorable Mention
To me, DESTRUCTION is a group of brothers who, at all times, travel in packs and set foot on the field with a fierce anger and one goal on the horizon: dominate the men across that line on every single play of the game. All brothers are willing to sacrifice, be relentless and do whatever it takes to win. We will overcome any obstacles that may come our way. Eleven men have 11 jobs to do on the field and as we accomplish those assignments, we become one. From beginning to end, we will cause chaos and destruction against our opponent.
Tanner Bleskin - Wide Receiver - 2012 All-Big Sky Conference Second Team
DESTRUCTION is when a group of men step on the field, willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good of the team; when a unit comes together to outwork and attack everything in its way with a well-balanced win being the ultimate outcome. When the bond is so tight between my brothers on the field, there is nothing that can come between us... when the collective group has each others' back no matter the situation. That is who we are when DESTRUCTION happens.
The duel between the offensive and defensive line is also referred to as "trench warfare." When playing offensive line, it's a huge battle within only two yards. Every time the whistle blows, it is a ware between me and the opponent. It requires pure willpower to dominate the man acrosse that line. The cost is blood, sweat and tears. That is DESTRUCTION.
Na'a Moeakiola – Linebacker – 2012 All-Big Sky Conference Honorable Mention
To me, DESTRUCTION is displayed as a band of brothers, who are relentlessly seeking to accomplish a mission; destroying whatever challenges or issues that may arise. If the band of brothers stand united as one every day, there is no question in the fact that they cannot be broken. It all comes down to each individual doing his job that contributes to the entire group's mission.
