Montana State sophomore Kelly McBroom notched the best finish for the Bobcat ski team on the opening day of the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championship, Wednesday morning hosted by Middlebury College.
Montana State sophomore Kelly McBroom notched the best finish for the Bobcat ski team on the opening day of the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championship, Wednesday morning hosted by Middlebury College.
McBroom finished 14th overall in the women's giant slalom with a clocking of 2:08.32. Right on her heels was sophomore Stephanie Irwin, who ended 16th with a time of 2:08.33. Rounding out the scoring for the Montana State women was Marissa Riopelle, 33rd, 2:11.34.
Denver's Kristine Haugen captured the women's giant slalom title in 2:04.60.
The Bobcat women totaled 56 points and had MSU in sixth after the opening event.
The Montana State men had a rough start to its NCAA meet as Mike Mackie, Sam Monsen and Michael Radford finished 23rd, 24th and 26th, respectively in the giant slalom.
“I thought it was a pretty good course, but the snow was tricky,” said MSU head alpine coach Luke Patterson. “We were fired-up, but we didn't come through. It was a tough day. Fortunately, we get another shot with the slalom on Friday.”
Defending national champion Vermont leads the team title chase after one event with 227 points. The Catamounts are followed in the top ten by Denver 210, Colorado 175.5, New Hampshire 165.5, Utah 164.5, New Mexico 144, MSU 103, Alaska-Anchorage 86.5, Middlebury 83 and Dartmouth 76.5
All six schools from the RMISA/NCAA West Regional sit among the top eight finishers on Wednesday.
The Nordic classic races will take place on Thursday morning.
