Track and Field gets six more for 2013-14 season
Montana State Track and Field is excited to announce their second wave of new student-athletes who have committed to become Bobcats beginning in the fall of 2013.
Six student-athletes join the three others that have already made their commitment to the Blue & Gold. Brenna Cockburn comes to MSU from Billings, Mont. where she is a 2013 graduate of Billings Senior. For the Broncs, she earned four letters in cross country and will earn three in track and field. She is a four-time academic all-state honoree and has twice earned the same award during track season. She served as team captain in cross country this past fall, as well as in her junior year. Also during her junior year, she was named the team's Outstanding Runner.
When she's not in her running shoes, she is a member of the National Honor Society and is currently serves as the senior class secretary at Billings Senior.
Taylor Floming will also join the MSU Distance Corps in the fall. A 2013 graduate of Monarch High School in Superior, Colo., Floming earned four letters each in cross country and track and field.
Most recently, Floming was the cross country team captain as a senior, helping guide the Coyotes to their second consecutive state championship title. She was a three time All-Front Range first team selection in cross country and once in track. Her best finishes on the track came her freshman year when she placed fifth in the state mile and her sophomore year placing ninth in the 3,200. Her sophomore year she also had the privilege of competing in the Nike National meet.
Outside of running, Floming is a four-time academic letter winner and was twice named to the CHSAA All-State Academic team in both cross country and track and field.
Jeannette Northey comes to Bozeman as one of the most highly touted runners to come out of Alaska this year. Most notably, she joins two other Alaskans, Jacob Kirk and Lierin Flanagan, who compete for the Bobcats and were named Gatorade Players of the Year. Northey earned the award in 2011 for a huge year running for Robert Service High School. She placed second at the State Championship meet, coming first in every other race in 2011.
Overall, she's earned four letters in cross country and three in track and field for the Cougars. She was also a two-time Cook Inlet Cup Champion.
Academically, she is a member of the National Honor Society and earned an academic letter.
Two jumpers are also ready to don the Blue & Gold come fall semester. Leah Cook hails from Whitefish, Mont., where she's a 2013 graduate of Glacier High School. She's earned four letters in track and field and two in cross country for the Wolfpack. In her junior and sophomore seasons, she was an all-conference and all-state selection and set the school record in the triple jump her junior year.
In addition, she was a two-time captain of the cross country team.
Academically, she earned the Academic Excellence Award her freshman, sophomore and junior years. She also participates in Speech and Debate and mentoring.
Jessica Chrisp will also come to MSU as a jumper after graduating from Riverside High School in Deer Park, Wash. She will end her career with the Rams with four letters each in cross country and track and field. Most recently, she was named to the first team All-Northeast A League honoree in cross country and helped her team to their second team state title in three seasons. As a junior and a freshman, she was an all-conference selection in the 400 and set a new program record of 58.90 in the 400 in just her first year of high school.
She's a four-time academic letter winner.
The lone thrower represented in this wave of student-athletes is Riley Sampson, who comes from Polson, Mont. Earning three letters each in football and basketball and four in track and field, he brings a lot of athletic experience with him to Bozeman. At the 2012 Class A State Championships he placed second in the shot put and also competed in the state meet as a sophomore. He was also an all-conference and all-state selection in football as a junior and senior.
Academically, he has received four all-state academic nods.
“There is a lot of talent in this particular group,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “It should also be noted that this group of six also brings some serious academic focus with them, as well. They are true student-athletes and will represent Montana State very well.”
