Montana State Nordic Team Posts Best Race of Season

The Montana State women’s Nordic squad had five skiers in the top 12, while the men’s contingent had two racers in the top ten as the Bobcats finished in fifth at the Utah Invitational, Saturday morning at Soldier Hollow.

Jessica Yeaton led the Bobcat women finishing fourth, covering the 15-kilometer freestyle event in 43:44.7. The Anchorage, Alaska native notched 41 points for MSU. Also scoring for Montana State and finishing in the top 10 were Annie Liotta, 8th, 45:21.6, and Kate Backstrum, 45:31.2.
“I felt really good from the start and just kept feeling better every lap,” Yeaton said. “I've been wanting a top five finish all season and I'm excited to have it all come together.”
Also contributing for MSU were Cambria McDermott, 11th, Isabella Smith 12th, and Alliy Ross, 29th.
“Five women in the top 12 is a great day for us,” said MSU head Nordic coach Chad Andersen. “It was by far the best results this season. It was really cool to see the women dig deep and have multiple personal bests. I really feel that they are racing their fastest when it counts the most and there is a lot of momentum headed into regionals.”
Bobcat All-American Tyler Reinking paced the MSU men in the 20k freestyle, placing fourth overall in a time of 50:21.4. He was followed by in scoring by Pat Madden, 8th, 51:13.4, and Marshall Opel, 16th, 52:27.9.
“It felt awesome today,” Reinking said. “The coaches really nailed the wax, which was great. I've always skied well on this course, which brought some energy. I'm looking forward to racing regionals in front of the home crowd.”
Rounding out MSU's finishers were Michael Schallinger, 22nd, Luke Bromley 24th, and Sam Dougherty, 28th.
“Tyler and Pat are both coming into form for regionals and the NCAAs,” Andersen said. “I think all Bobcats are fired up for regionals and looking to really put on a good show for our fans.”
Colorado won the Utah Invitational with 904 points, followed by Utah 845, Denver 777, New Mexico 695, MSU 690, Alaska-Anchorage 616, Westminster College 190 and Colorado Mountain College 40.
The Montana State alpine team will complete the New Mexico Invitational on Sunday.
The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championship and the NCAA West Regional will be held in Bozeman March 6-9.
