Bobcat Women Highlight Day Two at RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships

The Montana State ski team got a lift from Stephanie Irwin and Kelly McBroom on the alpine side and Jessica Yeaton and Isabella Smith in the Nordic event on the second day of the 2013 Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association and NCAA West Regional Championship, Saturday afternoon at Bridger Bowl and Bohart Ranch.

The Montana State ski team got a lift from Stephanie Irwin and Kelly McBroom on the alpine side and Jessica Yeaton and Isabella Smith in the Nordic event on the second day of the 2013 Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association and NCAA West Regional Championship, Saturday afternoon at Bridger Bowl and Bohart Ranch.
Irwin finished sixth in the giant slalom with a two-run total of 1:41.26, good for 37 points, while McBroom also notched a top finish placing tenth in a clocking of 1:41.67.
Emily Danza rounded out the Bobcats' scorers, finishing 16th in 1:43.56. She was followed by Terra Moran, 17th, and Tenaya Driller, 24th.
Denver's Kristine Haugen won the women's title in 1:39.23.
Yeaton notched her second consecutive top ten finish, placing sixth in the 15-kilometer freestyle in 52:39.5, while Smith ended up tenth overall in 53:19.5. Rounding out MSU's top three was Kate Backstrum, 15th, 55:00.6.
Also contributing for the Bobcats were Cambria McDermott, 16th, and Johanna Malle, 27th.
Colorado's Eliska Hajkova won the event in 51:25.7.
“The conditions weren't desirable, but certainly tolerable,” said MSU Nordic coach Chad Andersen. “We're excited for how our kids competed this weekend and we have a lot of momentum heading into the NCAA Championships.”
The men's Nordic team was paced by two-time All-American Tyler Reinking, who finished ninth, covering the 20K course in 59:50.6. He was followed in MSU's top three by David Norris, 13th, 1:00:33.7, and Pat Madden, 14th, 1:00:53.3.
“We're excited that both our men and women placed third in the Nordic team standings,” Andersen said. “That's the best we've done this season and it's nice that we are peaking at the right time.”
Also contributing to the men's Nordic effort were Michael Schallinger, 18th, Marshall Opel, 23rd, Luke Bromley 24th, and Sam Dougherty, 25th.
Utah's Miles Havlick won the men's crown in 58:35.65.
In men's giant slalom action, the Bobcats were led by newcomer Sam Monsen, who finished tenth overall with a two-run total of 1:40.28. Also scoring for MSU were Michael Radford, 13th, 1:40.35, and David Owsley, 19th, 1:40.85.
After three events, Colorado sits atop the team standings with 711 points. The Buffaloes are followed by Utah 625, Denver 616, MSU 549, New Mexico 523, and Alaska-Anchorage 477.
The championships will conclude with the slalom event, which is slated for a 9:15 a.m., start Sunday morning on the Hanton's Hollow course at Bridger Bowl.
