Bobcat Women Pace Nordic Squad at New Mexico Invitational

Behind two top 10 finishes by the Montana State women’s Nordic squad, the Bobcats sit in fifth place after the opening day of the University of New Mexico Invitational, Friday afternoon.

Freshman Isabella Smith led the Bobcats placing sixth overall in the five-kilometer classic race in a time of 18:07.4. The Bend, Ore., native racked-up 37 points for MSU. She was followed closely by Jessica Yeaton, who placed eighth in 18:12.3, and Cambria McDermott, 14th, 18:40.3.
The Bobcat trio totaled 96 points for the race, the third highest mark in the women's Nordic event behind Colorado 114 and Denver 104.
Other MSU finishers included Annie Liotta, 15th, 18:49.6, and Sina Sandholt, 16th, 18:35.7.
Colorado's Joanne Reid won the women's title in 17:12.2.
Skiing with just three racers, the Bobcat men's team posted 88 points. MSU was led by junior Pat Madden, who finished tenth overall, covering the 5K course in 15:18.1.
Madden recorded 31 points, just ahead of Bobcat All American Tyler Reinking, who finished 11th in 15:25.5. Luke Bromley rounded out the scoring placing 17th in 15:43.0.
Utah's Miles Havlick won the top spot on the podium in 14:10.7.
The Utes lead the team standings after one event with 228 points. They are followed by Colorado 217, Denver 199, New Mexico 186, MSU 184, Alaska Anchorage 166 and Wyoming 103.
The UNM Invitational will continue on Saturday with the Nordic freestyle and alpine slalom races.
