Senior Bobcat closes out cross country career on a national scale
Heather Demorest closed out a seriously impressive senior cross country season at the highest level possible when she made her first and only appearance at the NCAA Championship meet.
After finishing as the Big Sky Conference runner-up, then seventh at the NCAA Mountain Regional, took it one final step and punched her ticket to the big show. She placed 58th overall, in a field of 253 student-athletes, finishing with a time of 20:56.6 in the women's 6K race. Of all the Big Sky Conference participants completing in the women's race, Demorest was the highest BSC finisher.
"Heather really ran well," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "Despite a bit of a rough start, she recovered as best as she could from a serious pile-up at the first half-mile. She represented herself, her team and Montana State in the best light possible and we are so proud of her performance not only today but her entire career."
Abbey D'Agostino, from Dartmouth, was the individual champion with a time of 20:00.3. Although Demorest was the lone represenative for Montana State, Providence took the team title with 141 total points.
Demorest, from Darby, Mont., has shown huge improvement in just her last season, including an individual All-Big Sky honor in the 3,000 steeplechase in 2013, and she was part of the 2013 Distance Medley Relay Big Sky Championship team.
