Radford Claims Men’s Title at DU Invite; Yeaton Sixth at CU Invitational

Montana State’s Michael Radford kept his torrid pace going in the early season, claiming the men’s giant slalom title in the first day of action at the Denver Invitational at Winter Park, Colo., Saturday afternoon.

Radford, a sophomore from Sand Point, Idaho, notched a two-run time of 2:00.03. His 57.91 clocking in the first run gave him the lead he needed to sit atop the podium.
For the day, the Bobcat men's alpine team finished third overall. Also contributing to MSU's point total were Mike Mackie, 21st, 2:04.22, and Ryan McConnell, 27th, 2:06.71. David Owsley rounded out MSU's finishers placing 31st overall in 2:07.68.
The Bobcat women were led by Kelly McBroom, who placed 11th overall with a two-run total of 2:06.71. She was followed by Stephanie Irwin, 13th, 2:06.90, and Terra Moran, 16th, 2:07.33. Marissa Riopelle did not finish her first run.
After the opening day of the DU Invitational, the Pioneers sit in first place with 253 points, followed by Utah 193, Colorado 187, MSU 178, New Mexico 171, Westminster 160, Alaska Anchorage 141 and Colorado Mountain College 37.
And, while the DU Invitational got underway on Saturday, the Bobcat Nordic team was beginning its collegiate season at the CU Invitational.
Montana State junior Jessica Yeaton notched MSU's only top ten finish in the 15/20K freestyle, Saturday morning at Howelsen Hill.
Yeaton finished the course in 47:18.3 to record 37 points for the Bobcat contingent. Also scoring points were Cambria McDermott, 17th, 49:28.5, and Isabella Smith, 19th, 49:32.6. Kate Backstrum completed MSU's line-up in 23rd place overall in a clocking of 51:02.
“It was good to see Jessica finish with a top ten in the college season opener,” said MSU Nordic coach Chad Andersen. “She was tenacious from the start and kept pushing through to the finish.”
Colorado's Joanne Reid won the women's freestyle title in 45:58.1.
On the men's side, MSU All America Tyler Reinking guided the Bocbats placing 11th overall in a time of 56:57.3 to notch 30 points. He was followed in the top three by Michael Schallinger, 14th, 56:35.8, and David Norris, 18th, 57:11.0.
Also contributing to the Bobcat attack were Luke Bromley, 25th, 1:01.09, and Scott Phelan, 26th, 1:01.17.
CU's Rune Oedegaard captured the men's crown in 53:49.6.
“Tyler also did a great job,” Andersen said. “He is still recovering from a cold over the break and still had a strong race. It was a good first day on the RMISA circuit, but we are looking to build on this race in the classic events.”
The Bobcats slipped into sixth place in the team chase with 463.5 points. CU moved into the top spot after three events with 646 points. The Buffaloes are followed by Denver 620.5, New Mexico 578, Alaska-Anchorage 514, Utah 492, MSU, Westminster 259, and Colorado Mountain College 20.
The CU Invitational will conclude with the Nordic classic races on Sunday.
