Mohl notches three PRs at second day of decathlon
The 2012 season of Montana State Track and Field came to a close on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. (Decathlon Results | Hammer Throw Results)
Jeff Mohl placed 17th in the decathlon with a score 7,414 and just missed second team All-American status but one place. Despite a lower place than Mohl had hoped, he did see several bright spots over the tough two-day competition.
The Red Lodge, Mont. native did set a new Day 2 scoring personal scoring record, amassing 3,609 points on Thursday, with his previous score tallying 3,559. He also set new lifetime bests in the 1,500 (4:33.66) and the discus (35.75m)
He was in 15th place after the first five events and his highest finish in an individual event was fifth place in the 400. On the second day of competition, he posted a personal best in the discus with a throw of 35.75m (117-03).
“There was some sadness today, for sure,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “However, there are really a lot of great things for Jeff to take into the future and help build on his career.”
Amanda Murphy competed at her first NCAA Championship meet and failed to advance to the final round. Her best throw topped out at 58.08m (190-06) landing her in 19th place overall.
Murphy closes out a tremendous career with the Bobcats. She set a new program record in the hammer throw at the NCAA West Regional Meet with a hurl of 62.20m (204-01). That throw replaced the previous mark of 202-07 set back in 2005. She placed 12th overall in the west to advance to the Championships.
The Charlo, Mont. native was the Big Sky Champion in the outdoor hammer throw and indoor shot put this season.
“Amanda was a bit disappointed but thankful for the experience,” said Kennedy. “Overall, while the performances we hoped for may not have come to fruition, all of coaches and student-athletes have much to be proud of. They competed well and represented themselves and the University in the best light possible.”
