Bobcat by the Numbers takes a look at current and past Bobcats that correspond to the number of days remaining before Montana State opens the 2012 football season against Chadron State in Bobcat Stadium's first night game on August 30.

Spotlight: Of the major sports, football statistics may be the hardest to analyze. A lot of that is because of the game's nature. Only now do the most advanced metrics attempt to measure, for instance, the efficiency of offensive line play by anything other than the effectiveness of a quarterback or running back. But one thing is for certain – if you can hold down two different jobs for one team, you are making a serious contribution by anyone's measure. In the mid-1990s, unheralded former walk-on from Glasgow named Marcus Bragg was just such a player. Bragg nailed down punter duties near the end of his freshman season, averaging 39.7 yards a punt and pinning the opponent inside the 20 16 times. A year later he resumed his punting duties (averaging 38.3 yards on 43 punts) but also saw time at receiver. He caught 19 passes for 367 yards as a sophomore that year, adding six for 88 yards the next, with two touchdowns each season. As a senior Bragg caught 14 balls for 119 yards and a touchdown, and after not punting as a junior returned as a senior. He kicked 71 times for a 37.7 yard average.
