Mt. SAC Relays highlight trio of meets for Bobcats
Montana State Track and Field will hit the road for another weekend of high-intensity competition, this time at a trio of prestigious meets in the Golden State. On Friday, April 20, the Bobcats will send a split squad to the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa. The team will reconvene in full force on Saturday at the Beach Invitational in Norwalk.
With all this weekend's competitors already qualified for the Big Sky Championship in May, MSU will look to better their respective qualifiers and look a bit beyond hosting the conference meet in just three weeks.
“Many of these kids are looking to get on NCAA Regional Descending Order List,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “The regional meet, in Austin, Texas, takes the top-48 and while we have a few kids that are already within the list, we certainly can have a few more get in there.”
Jeff Mohl and Asa Staven, who rank third and seventh in the Big Sky, respectively, will kick off the weekend with the decathlon at Mt. SAC. Mohl is currently ranked 24th in the West and will look to secure a top-24 ranking in the nation to advance to the NCAA Championships, June 6, in Des Moines, Iowa.
In the women's heptathlon, MSU will be represented by Carley McCutchen and Sarah McGree. McGree enters the week ranked third in the Big Sky.
Fifteen additional Bobcats will also seek perfection at Mt. SAC. Katie Niemeir is slated to compete in both hurdle events and chip in with the 4x400 Relay. Joining Niemeir in the 4x4 are Sonia Antar, Lierin Flanagan and Chantel Jaeger. Antar and Jaeger will also compete individually in the 400. Madeline Fuchs will also compete in the 400 hurdles. Heather Haug will look to improve her 24th place regional ranking in the steeplechase.
Chris Wilson will represent the Blue and Gold in the 100, hoping to capitalize on a record breaking outing back on April 13.
Joining Wilson in the running events are Grant Grosvenor in 800, Dan Jackson in the 5,000 and Jake Turner in the steeplechase and 5,000.
In the field events, Montana State has five athletes looking to make their mark. David Phillips, one of three Bobcats who were named the Big Sky Athlete of the Week, is slated for the hammer throw, while Trevor Gilreath will contend in the shot put. Willie Sullivan, the conference leader in the javelin, will also compete.
Amanda Murphy will compete in both the hammer throw and the shot put. Last year Murphy placed 10th in the shot put and will seek to keep her 2012 outdoor record unblemished. Emily Tyrrell rounds out the Bobcat competitors at Mt. SAC and will also attempt to uphold her flawless 2012 record in the javelin.
“We're still gaining momentum at this point of the season,” said Kennedy. “We're moving in the right direction and I think after so many people posted season-bests last week, everyone is feeling really positive. We're about to be at a few meets that produce really high levels of competition and I think we'll respond well to that.”
Results for the Mt. SAC Relays will be live and available here.
