Three Local Organizations Benefit from Ash's Award

Liberty Mutual Comes to Bozeman for presentations
Montana State University Head Football Coach Rob Ash has selected three well-deserving groups in the Bozeman community to benefit from his 2011 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award. Liberty Mutual Insurance will present checks totaling $50,000 to the Greater Gallatin United Way, Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Montana, and the Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter at a Bobcat booster club event on Thursday evening, and at halftime of Saturday's spring football game at Bobcat Stadium.
In celebration of sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and excellence on and off the field, Liberty Mutual Insurance annually honors one coach each from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II and Division III with $50,000 to donate to local charities. Coach Ash is gifting $35,000 to the Greater Gallatin United Way to help further the group's mission to bring people and resources together to serve Gallatin, Madison, Meagher, and Park Counties; $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Montana to further the youth development programming and services for girls and boys in the region and $5,000 to the Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter.
“I am honored and thankful that Liberty Mutual has given me the opportunity to amplify the outreach of worthy charities in our community,” said Coach Ash. “Each of these organizations does an incredible job of making Bozeman, Montana, a wonderful place to live and coach.”
Liberty Mutual Insurance also will award $20,000 to the Montana State University Alumni Association to support scholarships. Since the award's inception in 2006, Liberty Mutual has donated more than $1.5 million toward charity and scholarship on behalf of its Coach of the Year Award winners.
“Coach Ash has been a true asset to the Montana State University community. He has brought pride to this campus, its alumni and the state of Montana,” said Jaynee Groseth, president of the Montana State University Alumni Association. “This generous contribution from Liberty Mutual will provide scholarships to outstanding student musicians in our Spirit of the West Marching Band, which helps to provide so many fans and alumni with an exciting game day experience.”
Now in its sixth season, the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award celebrates and recognizes college football coaches, not only for their integrity on and off the field, but also their success and achievements at the highest level of their sport. During the 2011 season Coach Ash exuded sportsmanship, selfless support of his community, and ensured that his student-athletes prospered in the classroom.
“As the 2011 FCS Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year, Coach Ash embodies what a true coach and mentor should be,” said Liberty Mutual Area Manager Andrew Anguis. “Honoring him with a trophy is wonderful, but providing these charitable and scholarship gifts throughout his community and to the university alumni association is the true reward of our Coach of the Year program.”
Coach Ash has had a tremendous 31-year career, and in just his fifth season at Montana State is already among the program's most-winning coaches. In 2011, Coach Ash led the Bobcats to a 10-3 record and the FCS quarterfinals. Off the field, Coach Ash and his staff embrace academic commitment and success, and as a result have seen the Bobcats' academic progress rate improve more than 60 points since arriving in 2006.
Coach Ash's award is now part of the permanent Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year display at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind. He is recognized alongside the other 2011 winners: Les Miles of LSU (FBS), Tim Beck of Pittsburg State University (Division II) and Glenn Caruso of the University of St. Thomas (Division III).
