Pads Pop as MSU Stages First Full-Contact Practice

Line play attracts attention during spring's third practice
Rob Ash couldn't help himself.
"I usually don't watch the lines (during practice) but I was very interested," Ash said following his Montana State football team's first full-contact practice of the spring. "I'm not concerned, but interested to watch the offensive line, especially, develop."
With only one returning starter - center Shaun Sampson - the Bobcat offensive line little resembles the unit that has been among the most productive in the FCS over the past two years. In fact, during Jason McEndoo's tenure coaching that unit - which enters its second decade - MSU has produced eight offensive line All-Americas.
That's the primary reason for Ash's excitement as MSU's 2012 spring practice session enters its second main phase, that of three consecutive full-contact practices. That, and the slew of talented young offensive linemen McEndoo works with this spring.
"I thought those guys did a nice job today," Ash said. "Today's practice was our first chance to work on downhill running plays, inside run, and that was a good segment."
Ash was pleased with the overall atmosphere on a brilliant spring Saturday in Bozeman. "I liked the enthusiasm," he said. "I liked the tempo. I thought the team did a good job playing physical football when we asked them to."
The Bobcats played without reserve quarterback Grayson Galloway on Saturday, after the senior left the team. That leaves junior DeNarius McGhee and redshirt freshman Jake Bleskin at quarterback. But Ash liked what he saw from that position on Saturday. "I thought both those guys had some good moments."
MSU continues its spring practices on Tuesday at 3:30 pm in Bobcat Stadium.
