MSU hopes to 'efficient' recruiting period ends happily on Wednesday
If football recruiting efficiency becomes an NCAA statistic overnight, Montana State may be among the national leaders when the dust settles on Wednesday.
Montana State's sixth-year head coach Rob Ash indicated that he hopes to sign around a dozen players on Wednesday, the first day most prospects are allowed sign National Letters-of-Intent to make their commitment to their future college binding. If every player that has committed to the Bobcats applies ink to paper in that manner, Ash said Tuesday that his staff will have completed a recruiting period at nearly a 90% success rate, he said Tuesday.
“I'm very excited,” Ash said of his potential 2012 recruiting class. “We had to have quality because we just didn't have many scholarships to offer. So we focused in on a few quality players, and we were able to convert an extremely high percentage of official visits to commitments. That was the key to this class, to identify the top players at positions where we had needs, and make sure we signed those guys.”
The Bobcats' main targets come along both lines, where the team hopes to add three offensive linemen and two defensive linemen on Wednesday. MSU also looks to address other needs scattered throughout the depth chart, with the possibility of landing two quarterbacks and two kickers, along with one player each at linebacker, defensive back and tight end.
Ash said the low numbers allowed the coaching staff to offer more personal attention to each of the players it targeted. “We only focused on the areas where we had needs, so we really able to be selective and settle in on the very best prospects. It was much easier to spend time with the guys individually, and some of the recruits commented that they spent more time with the head coach than usual on a recruiting trip. And I think our entire program was more personalized this year.”
MSU plans to post signings on www.msubobcats.com as the letters-of-intent arrive on Wednesday. Bobcat Athletics will host a Signing Day Party at 3:30 pm in the Stadium Club of Bobcat Stadium, which is free and open to the public.
