The Montana State women’s tennis team split a pair of matches in its season opener, defeating Lewis-Clark State 5-2, before dropping a 7-0 decision to Washington State, last weekend.

The Montana State women's tennis team split a pair of matches in its season opener, defeating Lewis-Clark State 5-2, before dropping a 7-0 decision to Washington State, last weekend.

“I thought we played alright for the opening weekend,” said MSU women's tennis coach Denise Albrecht. “Whenever you can get a road victory that is an accomplishment. The season is a process, and we need to continue to work hard.”

A pair of former Montana high school standouts played a major role in MSU's win over Lewis-Clark State. Ellie Crum (Great Falls) swept her match against LCS's Florencia Martina 6-0, 6-0, and combined with Andrea De La Torre at No. 2 doubles, where the tandem posted an 8-3 victory.

True-freshman Liana Bates (Whitefish) playing in her first collegiate match notched a 6-2, 6-1 sweep over LCS's Miranda Duggan at No. 6 singles.

The Bobcats will host Utah State on Saturday and New Mexico on Sunday, both beginning at 9 a.m., in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
