Norris Wins Men’s 15K Classical Crown at Colorado Invitational; Alpiners Begin DU Meet

The Montana State Nordic ski team remained hot at the Spencer Nelson Memorial-Colorado Invitational on Saturday as David Norris captured the men’s 15K classic race in 40:14.6 to take MSU’s first podium of the season.

“David had an unbelievable race,” said MSU Nordic head coach Grethe Hagensen. “He started off slow and just kept working his way to the lead.”
Norris was joined in the top ten by Tyler Reinking, who had his best classic race ever placing fifth with a clocking of 40:43.2. Rounding out MSU's top three was Michael Schallinger, who finished 12th overall in 41:46.6.
The trio accounted for 117 points, while the Bobcat women chipped in 90 points to move Montana State into a fifth place team finish, one-point ahead of New Mexico. Utah won the invite with 896 points and was followed by CU 872, Alaska-Anchorage 741, Denver 732, MSU 707, UNM 706, Westminster 293, Wyoming 183 and Colorado Mountain College 87.
The MSU women were paced by Jessica Yeaton, who finished seventh overall covering the 10K course in 33:00.7. She was followed closely by Ase Carlson, who finished eighth just seven-seconds behind Yeaton in 33:07.6. Casey Kutz completed MSU's top three placing 16th in 34:21.4.
Alaska-Anchorage's Jaime Bronga won the women's title in 31:53.0.
While the Bobcat Nordic squad completed the CU Invitational, the MSU alpine contingent began the Denver Invitational.
After the giant slalom event, Montana State sits in seventh place with 142 points. Utah is atop the standings with 240 points.
Racing at Winter Park, Colo., MSU's highest finish went to Terra Moran, who placed 12th overall with a two-run total of 2:02.80. She was followed by Stephanie Irwin, 18th, 2:03.91; and Kelly McBroom, 2:04.93.
The Bobcat men were led by Michael Radford, who finished 14th in a time of 1:58.15. Radford was joined in MSU's top three by Mike Mackie, 22nd, 1:59.09; and Geoff Irwin, 23rd, 1:59.28.
The slalom event will be held on Sunday afternoon, while the Nordic events will start Jan. 20.
