Bethley gets two interceptions as Bobcats roll

Not only was the defense stingy, but the offense was productive as Montana State easily handled Minot State 43-7 on Saturday in Bozeman.
The Bobcats (2-1 overall) amassed 370 total yards in the first half while racing to a 38-0 lead. Denarius McGhee threw touchdown passes of 60 yards to Elvis Akpla in the first quarter and 7 yards to Everett Gilbert in the second quarter. In between, Cody Kirk found the end zone from 1 yard out and again from 14 yards, and Tray Robinson, a junior, found pay dirt from 1 yard out in the second quarter.
For the game, MSU totaled 491 yards to just 176 by Minot State. McGhee completed 13 of 20 passes for 227 yards. Kirk led all runners with 75 yards on 13 carries and C.J. Palmer tallied 51 yards on 10 carries. Akpla caught three balls for 115 yards while Tanner Bleskin pulled in five for 80 yards.
Minot State (0-4) was led by Tyson Schatz with 64 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Bryce Jorgenson completed 10 of 29 passes for 78 yards.
The Bobcats offense benefitted from two timely interceptions by defensive back Steven Bethley. The first one resulted in the first score of the game, a 49-yard field goal by Jason Cunningham. Bethley's second pick led to Robinson's first Bobcat touchdown after playing the past two seasons at Nebraska. Robinson's touchdown was set up by a 49-yard completion from McGhee to Akpla.
Another defensive highlight came in the second quarter when MSU's Christian Keli'i sacked Minot State quarterback Bryce Jorgenson, knocking the ball loose in the process. Linebacker Roger Trammell recovered the pigskin and two plays later Kirk had his second touchdown.
The action slowed in the second half. The Beavers, who are transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II, reached the end zone on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Jorgenson.
The fourth quarter's only points came about on a 41-yard field goal by Cunningham and an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone when freshman linebacker Michael Foster got to Jorgenson, resulting in a 2-point safety. Overall, the Bobcats recorded five sacks.
MSU opens Big Sky Conference play next week at Eastern Washington. The defending national champions are 0-3 overall and0-1 in the Big Sky. Meanwhile Minot State plays host to Sioux Falls.
