Cody Kirk earned his first Big Sky Player of the Week award
Riding an impressive 38-14 win over future Big Sky rival UC Davis, Montana State moved up to no. five in The Sports Network weekly poll of media personnel and no. four in the coaches poll on Monday, the highest ranking since the 1984 National Championship season.
The Bobcats have been ranked in every poll since the beginning the 2010 preseason, including three weeks on the top 10 last year. From 1986 until 2010, the Bobcats made an appearance in the top 10 only one time, October 10, 2005. The team won the Big Sky that season, but lost a week later at Weber State and never resurfaced in the top 10 again until 2010.
Also on Monday, sophomore running back Cody Kirk was feted by the Big Sky Conference and College Football Performance Awards for his 155-yard rushing day on Saturday. Kirk earned Big Sky Player of the Week honors for the first time, and was also named CFPA National FCS Running Back of the Week.
Kirk helped pace a 507-yard offensive outburst that led the Bobcats to the victory in front of a school record crowd of 18,487. The 500-yard effort marked MSU's seventh time past that plateau in the last 14 games.
The Bobcats host Minot State on Saturday at 1:35 pm in Bobcat Stadium.
