Bobcats run through paces in Bobcat Stadium
It won't always look like a conventional scrimmage, but Rob Ash will put his Bobcat football team through the paces of an hour's worth of live 11-on-11 action Saturday beginning at 1 pm in Bobcat Stadium.
While the scrimmage will include several interludes – including some 11-on-11 non-contact time for starting quarterback DeNarius McGhee, who otherwise is limited only to drills this spring – it will give Ash some quality evaluation time. “These (scrimmages) give our young guys, guys that haven't had a lot of playing time, an opportunity,” Ash said. “Scrimmages are important for those guys.”
Primary among those inexperienced players getting a long look this spring, quarterback Grayson Galloway has already shown Ash improvement. “He's getting better every time out,” he said. “(Offensive coordinator) Brian Wright's big thing is precision and footwork, and this has been a learning experience for Grayson that way.”
Galloway runs the offense during contact periods in lieu of starter McGhee, sidelined while strengthening his non-throwing shoulder.
Last Saturday's limited scrimmage showed Ash positive signs on both sides of the ball. “We really got out of that scrimmage what we wanted to,” Ash said, “which was the first head-knocker of the spring. It served that purpose. We were a little short on finesse last week, but the guys were keyed up to hit and we got in a lot of physical contact.”
Ash said he is pleased with his team's progress through five practice sessions. “This team has shown a very business-like approach so far,” Ash said. “They work hard, and I like the camaraderie of this group. They enjoy each other, but when it's time to work they get after it.”
After Saturday, the Bobcats practice again next Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
