Ash looks to identify depth, leadership during spring practice
With mounds of freshly cleared snow pushed to the sides of the Bobcat Stadium field and construction crews working on the Stadium's new end zone complex, Montana State head coach Rob Ash welcomed 14 starters and over 80 players to the opening day of Bobcat spring football.
Ash said after the first day of practice that the excitement of the first day of work for a new team overwhelmed pride in last year's Big Sky Championship and anxiety over replacing a talented group of seniors. “The two most exciting days of the year are the first day of spring ball and the first day of practice in August,” the reigning Big Sky Coach of the Year said. “There's just nothing like those two days.”
While the Bobcats reveled in taking the field – “Finally,” smiled senior offensive tackle Leo Davis – the team was all business during the two-hour practice. Key items on Ash's spring agenda include replacing starters such as departed All-America Mike Person, and establishing depth on both sides of the ball. “We'll focus on the guys who are battling for open starting jobs,” Ash said.
That process will unfold throughout the spring, but Ash was pleased with what he saw on Wednesday. “I really liked the team's energy. They were enthusiastic and focused. It was a good day.”
