The Montana State women's tennis will open its 2011 season hosting three matches in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center this weekend.
The Bobcats will open play on Friday when it faces Air Force at 2 p.m. MSU will meet Gonzaga on Saturday at 2 p.m., before facing rival Montana on Sunday at 1 p.m.
MSU, who will be looking for its 11th straight Big Sky Conference tournament appearance, returns four letterwinners from last season, including three players in the top six of the ladder.
Charlotta Hjalmarsson (Karlskrona, Sweden) will move to the top spot this season after posting an 8-11 overall mark and a 5-3 Big Sky ledger at No. 3 last spring. Andrea De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and Jennifer Coll (Fountain Hills, Ariz) return to the Nos. 4 and 6 positions, respectively.
Three freshmen will make their debuts this weekend. Wena Tsan (Kuching, Malaysia), Paulina Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico) and Ellie Crum (Great Falls) will round out MSU's top six spots.
“This will be an interesting weekend in terms seeing how the team competes and how our newcomers adjust to the collegiate game,” said MSU head coach Denise Albrecht. “We have a very young team, so I expect a few growing pains in our development. The kids are super excited to get going.”
Last season, the Bobcats finished 8-11 overall and 5-3 in league play. MSU won its last three conference games of the season to make the four-team Big Sky tournament for the tenth consecutive season.
