The Montana State ski team had its best outing of the season finishing fourth after the first day of the University of New Mexico Invitational.

Leading the Bobcats was sophomore Chris Barber, who posted his best finish at MSU placing second in the men's slalom. Barber posted a two-run total of 1:35.57, finishing just behind New Mexico's Juho-Pekka Penttinen, who captured the individual title in 1:34.87.
Also scoring points for MSU were Geoff Irwin, 19th, 1:39.90, and Paul Britvar, 20th, 1:40.79.
The MSU women's slalom team saw its first top ten performance of the season as Karen Bell placed tenth with a two-run clocking of 1:42.55. Also contributing points for the Bobcats were Terra Moran, 13th, 1:43.80, and Ali Leighton, 15th, 1:47.82.
In Nordic action, the Bobcat men's team had the third best showing of the day, placing two in the top ten. Senior Bernhard Roenning finished fifth in the 10-kilometer classic race in 29:20, while Ryan Scott trailed closely in seventh at 29:32.
Rounding out MSU's top three was Luke Bromley, 15th, 30:33.7.
Casey Kutz gave the Bobcat women's Nordic contingent a top ten showing, finishing ninth in the five-kilometer event in 18:24. She was followed by Rachelle Kanady, 17th, 19:01, and Ase Carlson, 25th, 19:42.
New Mexico sits atop the team standings after the opening day with 449 points. The Lobos are followed by Utah 393, Alaska-Anchorage 374, MSU 362, Denver 342, Colorado 324 and Westminster 96.
The UNM Invite will conclude on Saturday with the giant slalom and freestyle races.
