Montana State senior Alex Penewell posted a season-high nine kills and the Bobcats outhit Seattle .225 to .176 to cruise to a 25-23, 25-22, 25-17 win over the Redhawks, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
“We were able to pass the ball well enough to get our middles involved and that opened up a lot of seems and that makes the offense more efficient,” said MSU head coach Sara Schaub.
Montana State (3-16) opened the match taking a 5-1 advantage following a Chelsea Oemcke kill. The Bobcats held a 22-17 lead, before Seattle (4-14) rattled off six straight points to take a 23-22 margin. Following a SU service error, Penewell pounded down two consecutive kills for the win.
In the second stanza, MSU held a 23-22 advantage and a Jennifer Lundquist kill and an Oemcke ace gave the Bobcats the victory.
“We were able to get comfortable leads and stave off Seattle's runs,” Schaub said. “I thought our seniors did a nice job of getting us a big point when we needed it the most.”
In the final set the Bobcats jumped out to a 12-4 cushion and cruised to the match win following a Redhawk service error.
Also contributing for the Bobcats were Rachelle Allen with seven kills, while Oemcke chipped in seven kills and three blocks. Lundquist finished with 26 assists, five kills and five digs.
MSU was paced defensively by Nicole Baker, who recorded a match-high 16 digs. Sarah Horton was also in double-digit digs with ten saves.
The Bobcats will host Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona next weekend in Shroyer Gym.
