MSU faces former, future league-mates
Fans heading to the newly-expanded Bobcat Stadium have the opportunity to see a glimpse into Montana State's conference future and a host of challenging Big Sky games capped by the annual Bobcat-Grizzly rivalry.
Montana State opens the season September 1 at Utah, a former Rocky Mountain Conference rival of MSU's in the 1920s and '30s, before inaugurating the newest configuration of Bobcat Stadium against future Big Sky Conference football rival UC Davis. “Utah is heading to the Pac 10 next year, and appropriately so,” said MSU coach Rob Ash. “That is one of the elite programs in the FBS.”
The Bobcats follow that contest with a battle against future Big Sky rival UC Davis, which Ash calls “an outstanding and traditionally strong FCS program. They beat a WAC opponent in San Jose State last year, and we know that this will be a great early-season challenge.”
Montana State's Big Sky schedule includes home games against Sacramento State, NAU, and Idaho State, and concludes with the 111th Cat-Griz clash. “We play in such a great conference because of the rivalries and because every single game is competitive and hard-fought,” Ash said. “This is a great schedule from a fans' standpoint, and the non-conference schedule will prepare us for Big Sky play.”
The Bobcats opener against Utah marks the Utes' first game as a member of the Pac 10, marking the second straight season the Bobcats have faced a Pac 10 foe. That game is slated for a Thursday night. MSU also visits defending FCS National Champion Eastern Washington, and hosts Minot State, which is moving to the NCAA Division II Northern Sun Conference.
