Freshman Ase Carlson finished sixth in the women’s five-kilometer freestyle to pace Montana State in the opening day of its own MSU Invitational.

Freshman Ase Carlson finished sixth in the women's five-kilometer freestyle to pace Montana State in the opening day of its own MSU Invitational.
The Bozeman product completed the course in 14:13.6, just 1:04 in back of individual medalist Maria Graefnings of Utah.
Also scoring for the Bobcat women's Nordic contingent were Casey Kutz, 16th, 14:49.1 and Melina Park, 19th, 14:57.4. Both Kutz and Park were NCAA qualifiers, last winter.
MSU also received contributions from Jessica Yeaton, 20th, 14:59.4; Kate Backstrum, 24th, 15:11.6; and Rachelle Kanady, 28th, 15:34.4.
Sophomore Tyler Reinking guided the Montana State men's team finishing seventh in a time of 25:21.2. Reinking, who was an All-American for MSU last season, was 55-seconds behind Colorado's Vegard Kjoelhamar, who won the event in 24:25.6.
The Bobcats' top three was rounded-out by newcomer Michael Schallinger, 17th, 25:56.4 and Drew Scott, 19th, 26:16.6.
Also posting strong finishes for MSU were Ryan Scott, 20th, 26:19.9; Bernhard Roenning, 22nd, 26:22.2; and Patrick Madden, 26th, 26:48.0.
Saturday's alpine races featured the giant slalom event at Big Sky.
Sophomores Michael Mackie and Chris Barber led the Bobcats finishing 18th overall with identical two-run times of 1:55.77. They were followed closely in MSU's top three by Geoff Irwin, 21st, 1:56.11.
Barber had the best individual run of the day for MSU, clocking the eighth best second run in 57.89.
Also posting time for the Bobcats were Ryan McConnell, 22nd, 1:56.56; Chet Cook, 32nd, 1:59.23; and Paul Britvar, 33rd, 2:00.06.
Utah's Ryan Wilson captured the individual title in 1:53.14.
Newcomer Marissa Riopelle led the MSU women's alpine contingent, placing 19th with a two-run total of 2:00.33.
She was followed in scoring by Karen Bell, 25th, 2:01.45 and Hannah Victory, 31st, 2:05.80.
Also competing for MSU were Ali Leighton, 32nd, 2:06.76, Terra Moran, 33rd, 2:07.15; Molly Shannon, 35th, 2:13.10; and Kristen Karr, 36th, 2:13.39.
Utah's Tii-Maria Romar won the giant slalom in 1:57.75.
Colorado sits atop the team standings after the opening day with 499 points. The Buffaloes are followed by Utah 462, New Mexico 373, Denver 373, Alaska-Anchorage 329, MSU 303 and Westminister 145.
The MSU Invitational will conclude with the Nordic classic races and the alpine slalom events on Sunday.
