TUESDAY PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
September 14, 2010
SENIOR CORNERBACK ARNOLD BRIGGS
What was the talk like on the bus on the way home?
AB: "A lot of talk was (about) how we played together. It was a team effort, it was a team loss, and it showed a lot about our team, how we came together. We really fought through that game. We really wanted to win, but it showed that we really have that team commitment and team unity, that we still can push through it and come together and get through it together as a team.”
How would you say the secondary has played through two weeks?
AB: "I feel like we played real good. I feel like we played together, too. Being that old guy back there I feel like we came together and it just looks good. We're real comfortable (having) all that experience back there in the secondary as a unit.”
What will you do Saturday?
AB: "Not right now. We're just rolling with it right now. We're watching film on them. It's any given Saturday, anything can happen. I feel like we just have to prepare like we would for any other team and come together and play together as a team and we'll pull a 'W' out.”
Describe the play where Montgomery broke through and you chased him down.
AB: "Honestly, I don't like to give up on a play, never, so I felt like my old legs could still chase him down and at least get him out of bounds or something. I felt real comfortable that I still have that speed but I didn't even really think I was going to get there. Luckily I got there.”
What did it feel like to chase down one of the fastest running backs in the Pac 10?
AB: "I still got it, that's what I thought about when I chased him down. Like, oh, wow, I've still got that speed. I've still got it in me.”
Did you feel that play could ignite the defense?
AB: "It really did, it really ignited everybody. It was like, oh my gosh, Arnold just hustled down and got him. It showed everybody that we're still in this, we've got this, we can pull together and come through and beat this team. So I felt it really brought a spark to the defense.”
What challenges does the Drake offense present?
AB: "After watching film I saw they pass the ball, so I hope the secondary's ready to get some takeaways. We haven't got any yet, so I hope this is the game we can get some.”
How did you think you fared against Washington State's wide receivers?
AB: "I felt like we planned very well toward them. We watched a lot of tape together. They were a good wide receiver group, so we just kept on watching film on them and tried to get their tendencies down, their techniques, and I felt we did real good against them.”
As well as you did, were you frustrated by some of their screens?
AB: "You just have to rally to those screens, just rally and good tackling, that's what we really did. Just rally to the football and try to get them down.”
Have you put the Washington State game behind you?
AB: "I think we're going to let it out (against) Drake, really. All of us are frustrated and angry so I feel like all of us are just going to go balls out this week.”
How important is it to have a short memory after a game like last week?
AB: "It's really important. You can't keep on lingering, lingering on on a loss that was really close. Like Coach Ash said, we have to keep moving on. It's a new day, it's a sunny day outside, we're just going to keep on moving on.”
Are you looking forward to playing only FCS opponents the rest of the season?
AB: "I feel like any competition is great competition. It doesn't matter what division they're in, we're just going to play together and have some fun on Saturday.”
Do you gain confidence from playing a team like Washington State that close?
AB: "It just shows that we have a good team, it's a real good team, that's what it shows me.”
Compared to previous years how does this team look through two games?
AB: "There's still a lot of football going on. We'll see how it is on Saturday. Just keep on going.”
What do you have to do to make sure you finish, that an ending like that doesn't happen?
AB: "Our quote that we're saying is finishing. Things happen, we just let it slip away through our hands. We'll get through it. We'll finish. We'll just see on Saturday how it is.”
Did you make the progress you had in mind?
AB: "I felt like it showed a lot, that we were in there to try to win, that we're a good team and that we're just going with the punches.”
You played very aggressive, is there confidence since the coaches let you take chances?
AB: "Coach Marshall does a good job of play-calling. He knows he has some good athletes, so just let us ball out, let us man up, let us blitz, let us do anything, because he knows we have a good defense. He was confident in us.”
Do you like the aggressive game plan?
AB: "I like playing man-to-man, I like that blitzing because the ball gets out really, really fast, so it gives us the opportunity to get interception. I like Coach Marshall calling (defensive) plays.”
What is the rapport between the offense and defense right now?
AB: "Honestly, I just said we're going to lose together (and) win together. After the loss we weren't pointing fingers at anybody. It was a team loss, if we win it's a team win. Like Coach Ash said, it's a team loss. That's how football is.”
Would you rather be playing a Big Sky team this week?
AB: "I feel like it's more football, more fun times. That's how I look at it.”
Did you feel like you were the better team Saturday?
AB: "Honestly, I felt like we were the better team, but things happen in football. You don't even know where it's going to go, it bounces this way, that way. I felt like we were the better team, hey, we didn't get that finishing touch.”
Do you have the game plan yet?
AB: "Right now we haven't talked about anything, we just watched tape and today's the first day of practice, a new day.”
Is this game more important because Coach Ash came here from Drake?
AB: "Not really, we're just taking it as a new team to play. It's just someone on our schedule, so let's get it on.”
JUNIOR RUNNING BACK ORENZO DAVIS
Do you remember any of the shots you took any more than the others?
OD: “Pretty much the stitches one. My helmet was coming off and another guy came and hit me. I thought it was straight. Have you ever had an experience where your ear stings and it hurts real bad? I thought it was straight, and a Washington (State) guy was like, “Oooh.” And I was like, “Is it bleeding.” And he was like, “Yeah,” so I just came out of the game.” (The ear required six stitches after the game.)
Would you like more touches than you got Saturday?
OD: “As long as my team wins it doesn't matter how many touches I get. When I get the ball I'm going to do what I can do for my team.”
What do you see when you get the ball in open space?
OD: “Just God-given talent, I'm just trying to get yards.”
Did you know you'd get more carries going into the Washington State game?
OD: “I was just going with the flow.”
Why do you think you get the majority of the touches coming out of the backfield?
OD: “I don't know. I can't answer that.”
Is this year's receivers group more balanced?
OD: “Mostly speed. The other running backs are powerful, I have more speed.”
Do the guys give you a hard time for being the smallest running back?
OD: “Oh, yeah, they always crack jokes on me in practice for how short I am.”
Has The Blaster (practice tackle simulator) helped your game?
OD: “Yeah, it helps me a lot, even though sometimes it gives me big bumps and bruises. Sometimes I complain about it, but coach is like, 'It helps you out.'”
OD: “Yeah, it helps me a lot, even though sometimes it gives me big bumps and bruises. Sometimes I complain about it, but coach is like, 'It helps you out.'”
How did you grade out in film?
OD: “They said I did great, but after a game like last Saturday I'm not satisfied. I need to keep improving.”
Are you still confident even after last weekend?
OD: “Oh yeah, we're very confident. Going against a Pac 10 team, even though we lost, I feel like we have a great chance to win the Big Sky Conference championship.”
Can you break down the play where you made a block for Denarius then leaked out of the backfield and caught a pass?
OD: “I tried to cut block a guy but it didn't happen, so I saw Denarius start to roll out so I tried to get open and he saw me.”
With a quarterback like Denarius do you feel like a play is never over?
OD: “The play isn't over until the whistle blows, so I'll keep doing anything I can.”
Has the running back competition made you a better player?
OD: “I like to be a guy that competes, so I just compete.”
Is your pass blocking improving?
OD: “When I first got here it was kind of off, but now it's getting better.”
How is it to work with Coach Dixon?
OD: “He's a great coach. He gets me pumped for each game, every practice he says things that are motivating.”
What kind of things are you looking to do on Saturday?
OD: “Just help my team win. I'm not satisfied with a loss.”
