MSU adds former Baylor, Hampton standout to coach running backs
Kerry Dixon II, the offensive coordinator at Stillman College the past year, has joined the Montana State football coaching staff to mentor running backs, Bobcat head coach Rob Ash announced Friday.
Dixon coached quarterbacks at the NCAA Division II school in Tuscaloosa, Ala., last season, and coordinated an offense that produced honorable mention All-America running back Quinn Porter. The senior rushed for a league-leading 138.6 yards per game in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2009.
“The thing I like about Kerry is his overall offensive knowledge,” said MSU offensive coordinator Brian Wright. “He brings a perspective to the running back position with the entire offense in mind. He's young and energetic, and comes as a highly-recommended, hard-working young coach. He's moved up the coaching ranks quickly.”
Prior to his stint at Stillman, Dixon coached quarterbacks at Texas Southern in 2008 and at Morgan State in 2007, each FCS schools. He began his coaching career in the high school ranks at his alma mater, Booker T. Washington High School in Houston, Tex. (2005-06). He threw for over 1,500 yards as a prep senior in spite of missing four games with a broken wrist. Dixon's offensive coordinator as a prep player was Clarence McKinney, a former Bobcat quarterback who now coaches running backs at the University of Houston.
“I really like the breadth of Kerry's experience,” Ash said. “He has coached a lot of different positions, he has been a coordinator, he knows the entire offensive side of the football. Plus, he has great connections in the state of Texas, and that is an important recruiting area for us.”
Dixon played quarterback at Baylor in 2000, starting twice as a true freshman, but moved to receiver the next season and redshirted with an injury. He transferred to Hampton, playing both receiver and quarterback for the Pirates from 2002-04. He served as a team captain at Hampton as a senior, and played in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities All-Star Classic in 2005.
“I think this is a great opportunity,” Dixon said. “Coach Ash has the program going in the right direction, and I'm happy to be part of the family. I heard of Montana State when I began coaching in FCS and I played for (McKinney) in high school, so I've known about Montana State for a long time.”
Dixon replaces Milo Austin, who left MSU earlier in the summer for a position at the University of Cincinnati.
