MSU punched up its ground game on Wednesday
Rob Ash knows that Orenzo Davis, who Montana State landed as a transfer from Palomar College in California on Wednesday, is built like former Bobcat star Demetrius Crawford. He realizes that Davis joins MSU program during the summer months, a non-traditional recruiting period, as Crawford did nearly three years ago, and like Crawford, and that the comparisons are inevitable.
And he's plenty happy about it.
“It's everyone's hope that Orenzo has the same type of impact on our program,” Ash said with a chuckle. “If he's like that young man (Crawford) we'll enjoy having him in our program and he'll have an outstanding career.
“And yes, we do see the similarities,” Ash added.

Davis, a 5-9, 185 lb junior, brings outstanding production to the Bobcat program. He rushed for 1,014 yards at Palomar College last fall, caught 21 passes for 152 yards, and led the team with 24 kick returns for 768 yards and a 94-yard touchdown. He scored 13 touchdowns in all, and leaves Palomar with 1,513 rushing yards in two seasons. A native of Littleton, Colo., Davis rushed for 1,416 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior in 2007 at Columbine High School.
“I like the fact that he's an explosive player,” Ash said. “He has big-play potential, but he's also a back who is durable, he can run inside. He's very versatile, not just a speed guy.”
Davis joins a talented Bobcat backfield, where CJ Palmer and Blayde Becksted combined for 725 yards a year ago. Ash said the increased depth and competition enhance his team's offense.
“We know we need consistent production in the running game,” Ash said. “We have a good offensive line and a good system in place, and we need to make sure we have guys to carry the mail. Orenzo gives us more competition and more depth.”

Ash also indicated Davis could see time as a kick returner next fall.
