Bobcat senior lands prestigious honor
Montana State defensive end Dustin O'Connell earned a prestigious National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award from the organization's Montana Chapter.
“Dustin O'Connell is the consummate team player," said MSU coach Rob Ash. "He has worked his way up the depth chart from a partial scholarship to a full scholarship player, and along the way he has always been ready for any assignment or duty he was asked to do. Frequently coming off the bench, or starting for an injured upperclassman, he routinely would go out and play an assignment-sound, productive game as if he were the full-time starter."
In 2009, O'Connell played in all 11 games, starting three times. He registered 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks for the season.
Ash lauded O'Connell's efforts off the field. "His contributions do not begin and end with statistics. Dustin brings a deeply competitive but enthusiastically positive approach to the game, inspiring confidence and energy in his teammates, and he provides a terrific example for every Bobcat football player with his emphasis on the team instead of on himself. He is also an outstanding model for off the field performance, with his 3.3 GPA in a very challenging Business curriculum, and his commitment to service both on campus and in the community. He is a perfect choice to be the recipient of this prestigious award from the National Football Foundation.”
