MSU Improves Throughout First Limited Scrimmage of Spring

Bobcat coach Rob Ash saw positives on both sides of the football
Rob Ash would feel just fine about Montana State's 2010 spring training camp if the first limited scrimmage of the spring marks a trend that holds through the next three-plus weeks.
The Bobcats ran 57 plays in a scripted scrimmage that ran just more than an hour, and Ash said the day's most positive outcome was his team's performance trending up as the session went. “It got better as we went along,” Ash said. “The first part of the scrimmage was all first downs and kind of vanilla, and that's when it was kind of sloppy. Then we got into third downs and I thought we made some good plays.”
While the three quarterbacks combined to complete 19 of 25 passes for 144 yards, with three passes dropped. Blayde Becksted carried four times for 23 yards before an ankle injury ended his day, while Cody Kirk (6-30) and Jordan Rohrich (3-22) each ran the ball well, also. Ash credited MSU's offensive line for much of that success. “I liked the offensive line guys, the way they played today,” Ash said. “They came off the ball well. I really liked the way our running backs ran the football, because that means the offensive line blocked well. I thought Cody Kirk and Blayde Becksted, before he got hurt, ran the ball really well.”
The only downer in the ground game was Becksted's injury. “CJ Palmer already has some issues with a foot injury,” Ash said. “We'll have to see how that goes. That could be an interesting situation to deal with, because we're already short at that position.” Kirk and Rohrich stand as MSU's only healthy running backs at the moment, although Ash indicated that some creative personnel management could shore the position up going forward.
