“Mike really banged up his knee in training on Tuesday and was doubtful to start the race,” said MSU head coach Dan Brelsford. “We waited until the last minute and made a safe call for him to go ahead and compete. Lattimer, a senior from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, and MSU's lone female alpine qualifier, placed 28th in the giant slalom with a two-run total of 2:00.16. She finished 28th overall in both the first and second runs.
“I'm really happy with the way we opened the championships,” Brelsford said. “All three improved upon their pre-race seedings, so I'm pleased with the results.

Denver's Leif Kristian Haugen won the men's giant slalom crown in 1:48.84, while Utah's Eva Huckova won the women's title in 1:54.54.
