Bobcat Spikers Earn First Victory

The Montana State volleyball team defated Coppin State 21-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-15, to snap its 25-match losing streak.
The Montana State volleyball team earned its first victory of the season and snapped a twenty-five match losing streak with a 21-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-15 win over Coppin State, Friday afternoon at the CEFCU Classic hosted by Bradley University.
“Our serve-receive really broke down in the first set,” said MSU head coach Sara Schaub. “However, the student-athletes stayed patient and got into a good rhythm and everything just started to click.”
Montana State (1-6) trailed 7-0 in the opening set and closed the margin to 20-20 in the late going. Coppin State (0-9) answered with a 5-1 run to close out the set.
The Bobcats outhit the Eagles .284 to .022 and held a commanding 42-18 edge in kills to cruise to victories in the final three sets.
“Everyone got in and contributed,” Schaub said. “Our players did a nice job adapting to what we were given and we were going pin-to-pin very successfully.”
Senior Kyla Hendry paced MSU with a career-matching 14 kills, while hitting .500 from the field and adding three blocks. The Bobcats also received a strong performance from freshman Taylar Barney with eight kills, a .316 attack mark, nine digs and a team-high four blocks.
“Offensively, we really spread the ball around,” Schaub said. “It was a very balanced attack.”
Defensively, MSU held a 63-48 advantage in digs. Three Bobcat players reached double-digit digs led by Meghan Albiston 19, Rachelle Allen 11, and Allyson Porter 10.
"We were disciplined on defense and did a nice job tracking down the ball,” Schaub said.
The Bobcats will face UTEP and Bradley on Saturday.
