MSU Throws Program Ranked 17th in Nation

The purpose of the rankings is to provide a comparison of college throwing programs. The rankings are based on the final statistics in each division prior to regionals or national championships in men’s and women’s shot put, discus, hammer and javelin.
The website calculates the success of the throwing programs on several factors: scholarships available, recruiting, facilities, coaching, and the results of individual throwers. Montana State was one of two Big Sky Conference schools in the top 75. Eastern Washington’s throwing program was rated 55th.
The 17th place ranking for Montana State’s throwing program puts MSU in elite company. The only other NCAA I-AA school in the top 20 is Southern Illinois.
MSU’s two student-athletes headed for the NCAA Championships June 10-13, Nick Lam and Emily Tyrrell, are both javelin throwers coached by Jorah Griffith. At the recent NCAA Midwest Regionals, 12 of MSU’s 16 entrants were throwers. MSU men’s and women’s throwers racked up 151 points at the conference championship this year, far surpassing any other Big Sky school. The Bobcats have led the throwing category at the conference meets for nine consecutive years.
“Our throws program was ranked as high as ninth in 2005,” throws coach Mike Carignan said. “Our program is well developed on both sides-men and women. Some programs get a lot of success (scoring) out of one or two events or athletes, but we have a lot of depth in every throwing event.”
Asked about the success of the program, Carignan cites the strength of Montana’s high school throwing programs.
“We have really good prospects right here in Montana. Our program is made mostly of Montanans that want to go to school here. Jorah (Griffith) and I together have 35 years at MSU.”
Carignan and Griffith will return 148 of those 151 points from the conference meet next season, by far the largest group of talented returners, according to Carignan.
