Verlanic and Driscoll Receive Big Sky Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards

Each institution nominated a male and female student-athlete that exemplified excellence in academics and performance in their sport. This year’s honorees from Montana State are seniors Jim Verlanic (Anaconda) and Elisabeth Driscoll (Bozeman).
Verlanic, a cell biology and neuroscience major, played four years for the Bobcat Football program, mostly at the center position. He was a team captain his senior year. He was a National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete for Montana and a two-time Hayden Ferguson Academic Awards winner, which is presented to the football program’s top student-athlete. He was a two-time ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America Region VII honoree. After his senior season, he earned Academic All-Star honors from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. In addition, Verlanic became one of six finalists for a $5,000 post-graduate scholarship from the organization. The FCS ADA rewards two scholar-athletes with grants each year. He hopes to attend medical school. His father, Ken, also played as a starting lineman for the Bobcats.
Driscoll graduated with a double major in mechanical engineering and German with a 4.0 grade point average. She was a three-time Big Sky All-Conference selection in cross-country and a two-time all-conference performer in track and field. Most recently, Driscoll captured the 10K conference championship at the 2009 BSC outdoor championships in Missoula. In addition, she was the 2009 A.L.L. Star Award recipient as the individual student-athlete donating the most hours to community service. Driscoll was a multiple Big Sky Conference all-academic selection and a multiple ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA All-America Region VII first team selection. She was on the President’s List at Montana State every semester of her enrollment. Driscoll graduated from Bozeman High School.
“Elisabeth Driscoll and Jim Verlanic reflect the kind of achievement and excellence that embody what Bobcat Athletics is all about,” Director of Athletics Peter Fields said. “The amount of time and dedication needed to accomplish what they both did in the classroom and in their sports is amazing. They have represented themselves, their families, their teams and Montana State extremely well. We wish them both tremendous success.”
