'Cats Finish Regionals With One Auto Bid and Several Possibles

On Friday, junior Nick Lam placed third in the javelin with a personal best and automatically qualified for the national meet. On Saturday, there were no top five finishers to get that auto bid, but it’s possible that three more ‘Cats will be going to Arkansas June 10-13.
Javelin thrower Emily Tyrell placed ninth in her event with a toss of 153’0”. Earlier in the season, Tyrell had a throw of 166’ that still places her high on the descending order list, and coupled with her ninth place finish Saturday, she has a good chance of an at-large bid.
“I would be shocked if she doesn’t get in,” head coach Dale Kennedy said. “She placed high enough today to get in that pool of kids that will go next, and I think she’ll be in.”
Also on Saturday, junior Matt Adams placed 11th in the steeple chase and will have a shot at getting an at-large bid as well based on his faster time earlier in the season. In addition, senior javelin thrower Dan van Swearingen could get an at-large in the javelin with a combination of his ninth place finish Friday and a personal best throw of 216’6” earlier in the season.
The at-large entries for the national meet in Fayetteville will be announced on Tuesday.
