Bobcats Netters Host Three Big Sky Matches

The Montana State men’s and women’s tennis squads will host matches within the friendly confines of the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center, this weekend. The MSU women’s team will host Northern Arizona, Friday, April 10 at 6 p.m., in its only match of the weekend. The Bobcat men’s squad will face Northern Arizona on Saturday at 6 p.m., followed by Weber State on Sunday at 10 a.m. The times listed are based on indoor play. Should the weather cooperate, match times will be moved to 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
That Was The Week That Was:
The Montana State women’s tennis team posted a 6-1 win over Northern Colorado on Friday. The win pushed MSU’s record to 8-8 overall and 4-1 in Big Sky action- good for second place. Montana State captured the opening doubles taking wins at No. 2 and 3. MSU’s No. 3 tandem of Laura Villegas and McKenzie Hilmer posted a narrow 9-7 decision over UNC’s Jill Kappel and Jennifer Whateley. After dropping the No. 1 singles match, the Bobcats stormed back capturing the next five matches all in straight sets. The Bobcat men’s tennis team won the opening doubles point, sweeping all three matches, en route to a 6-1 win over Portland State on Saturday. Montana State pushed its lead to 3-0 as Corey Smith and Fletcher Keyes each won in straight sets at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. Freshman Alberto Fuentes secured the match for MSU defeating PSU’s Branislav Valach 6-2, 6-2. MSU closed out the contest winning at No. 3 and 6 singles, where Pawel Turzanski and Esteban Ferrero each notched victories.
Bobcat Players of the Week:
Junior Corey Smith and freshman Missy Harris have been named Montana State’s Players of the Week for their efforts last weekend. Smith had Montana State’s most dominating performance as the Bobcats defeated Big Sky Conference rival Portland State 6-1 in the BATC. Smith, playing at No. 2 singles, defeated PSU’s Alex VanDerschelden 6-1, 6-0. In addition, Smith combined with Alberto Fuentes at No. 2 doubles, where the tandem defeated Adam Blackner and VanDerschelden, 8-3. Missy Harris posted a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Northern Colorado’s Manuela Santos at No. 2 singles to lift the Bobcats to a 6-1 win over the Bears. Harris improved to 12-2 in singles action, including a 9-2 mark at No. 2 singles. In addition, she teamed with Stephanie Jasper at No. 2 doubles, where the twosome posted an 8-2 win over UNC’s Tiffany Knop and Jodi Ciarvella. Harris and Jasper have notched a 5-1 mark in doubles play, including a perfect 4-0 mark at the No. 2 spot.
‘Cat Chat:
Corey Smith was ranked 82nd in the ITA Preseason poll. He became only the second Bobcat ever ranked in the top 100. Smith joined Federico Ueltschi, who earned his highest ranking of 58 in 2004.
