Highwood’s Semansky Inks with Montana State Women’s Basketball Program

Semansky recently led the Mountaineers to the Montana Class C state title and was named MVP of the state tournament. The 6-foot forward averaged 22.6 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.9 assists per game, while shooting 63 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line as a senior.
“We really liked her mental and physical toughness,” Binford said. “She is a very skilled high school player and comes from a very successful program.”
During her tenure at Highwood High School, the girls basketball program posted a 101-7 overall mark, including a 26-0 mark this winter. For her efforts, Semansky garnered her third consecutive all-state honor.
As a junior, Semansky averaged 15.2 points and 8.8 rebounds as the Mountaineers claimed the Montana Class C title. She was named MVP of the state tournament for her play.
“Rachel does a great job finishing around the basket,” Binford said. “She’ll give us strength upfront and that’s an area we really want to improve upon.”
An outstanding athlete, Semansky also led HHS to the 2008 Montana Class C state volleyball crown and became a three-time all-state selection. In addition, she was an all-state pick in track and field and placed second in the pole vault and fifth in the javelin.
Semansky served as president of her National Honor Society and was a four-time academic all-state honoree and a four-time high honor roll selection.
Semansky’s signing gives Binford six newcomers heading into the 2009-10 campaign. Binford also indicated more signings could happen next week.
“I really like the make-up of this recruiting class,” Binford said. “We’re very excited to have signed three Montana kids we feel will play a significant roll in our program. Five of the six took their teams to state championship games, and that will help carry over into our program.”
