Seniors Guide Montana State Women Past Eagles

“I couldn’t be happier for our seniors,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “It was their night and they came ready to play.”
Nubia Garcia eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau, Mara Hoefer posted a career-high 15 points, and Anne Phippard hit a three-pointer and pulled down four rebounds as the Bobcats finished third in the Big Sky Conference race.
In all, six Montana State (14-14, 8-8) players hit double-figures, led by Hoefer, Garcia 10, Katie Bussey 10, Jenny Heringer 10, Lyndi Seidensticker 10, and Jamie Thornton 10.
“We were very balanced with our scoring and the bench was phenomenal,” Binford said, referring to the Bobcats 45-point output from its reserves.
The first half featured eight lead changes and seven ties, but MSU closed out the period on a 13-3 run to hold a 40-34 advantage at intermission.
Bobcat freshman Katie Bussey nailed a three-pointer at the 16:37 mark of the second stanza to give Montana State a double-digit cushion and Eastern Washington (10-19, 5-11) would get no closer.
MSU built its largest lead of the game at 79-55 with 4:39 left on a pair of Sarah Strand free throws.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 48 percent from the field and converted 20-24 free throws. MSU also out-rebounded the Eagles 39-29 as Garcia and Thornton paced the Bobcats with seven and six boards, respectively.
Junior point-guard Erica Perry matched a season-high six steals, while adding eight points and four assists.
EWU was guided by Julie Piper with 19 points and five rebounds.
With the victory, the Bobcats will be the No. 3 seed at next week’s Big Sky Conference tournament in Missoula. MSU will face No. 6 Northern Arizona on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., in Dahlberg Arena.
