The Montana State women’s basketball team will close out its regular-season when it hosts Portland State and Eastern Washington this weekend. The Bobcats will open this week’s play against the Vikings on Thursday evening. PSU enters the contest tied with Montana for the top spot in the Big Sky Conference. Portland State’s lone loss in league came at the hands off the Bobcats on Jan. 31, when MSU knocked off the Vikings 94-90 in overtime at the Stott Center. The Bobcats will face Eastern Washington on Saturday as it celebrates ‘Senior Night’ for Nubia Garcia, Anne Phippard and Mara Hoefer. The Eagles will play at Montana on Thursday before traveling to Bozeman. The Bobcats have clinched a spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament. The location of the tourney will go to the winner of the Montana-Portland State game on Saturday in Missoula.
Bobcat Player of the Week:
Freshman Katie Bussey was named Montana State University Player of the Week for her effort in MSU’s win over Northern Colorado, last Saturday in Worthington Arena. The 5-foot-9 native of Alamosa, Colorado posted a team-high 19 points, converting seven-of-12 from the field. In addition, Bussey hit four-of-six free throw attempts and connected on her lone three-point attempt. She also added four rebounds, two assists and a block shot in 34 minutes of action. Bussey is currently the top freshman scorer in the Big Sky Conference, averaging 10.9 points per game. She is shooting 39 percent from the field and has knocked-down 33-of-88 3-pointers.
That Was The Week That Was:
Montana State freshman Katie Bussey scored a team-high 19 points as the Bobcats clinched a Big Sky tournament berth with a 78-69 victory over Northern Colorado, Saturday night in Worthington Arena. Bussey converted seven-of-12 from the field and four-of-six from the free throw line. She also added four rebounds and two assists. Also in double-figures for Montana State were Lyndi Seidensticker 14, Sarah Strand 11 and Jenny Heringer 10. For the game, the MSU bench outscored Northern Colorado 30-16. With the scored tied at 24-all at the 6:36 mark of the opening period, MSU rattled off a 9-0 run capped by a Strand three-pointer. The Bobcats entered the break with a 37-28 advantage. In the second stanza, MSU built its largest lead of the contest at 64-48 with 9:14 left on a Seidensticker field-goal. UNC fought back and closed the margin to 71-65 with 3:09 remaining on a Whitley Cox layup. The Bobcats converted five-of-eight free throws down the stretch to stave off the Northern Colorado rally. Montana State ended the contest shooting 48 percent from the field, while holding the Bears to 33 percent.
Dialing Long Distance:
Montana State has converted 156 3-pointers this season. As a team, the Bobcats are shooting 35 percent from beyond the arc. Six MSU players have tallied 15 treys or better on the year- led by Jenny Heringer and Katie Bussey with 33 3-pointers, and followed by Sarah Strand 30, Anne Phippard 22, Lyndi Seidensticker 22 and Erica Perry 15.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I from 2005-06 to 06-07, improving 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign to 13-16 in 06-07. Last year, the Bobcats moved up again posting its first winning season under Tricia Binford’s tutelage with an 18-13 mark and an 11-5 Big Sky slate. The 2007-08 season culminated with a trip to the league title game for the first time since 2003.
To Catch A Thief:
Last year, Montana State finished second in the Big Sky in steals per game led by Erica Perry, who ended the season ranked 30th in the nation at 2.8 per contest. So far this winter, MSU is averaging 7.65 per game.
