Montana State Netters Go 1-2 on Utah Road Trip

Entering the match, the Bobcats had dropped a pair of matches to No. 62 Utah (5-2) and No. 63 Brigham Young (7-0).
“It was a good feeling to end the road trip with a victory,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “I thought, overall, we played well all weekend. Our match with Utah was as good a match as we’ve played all season. The guys competed very hard and were smart and disciplined.”
MSU opened it match with USU dropping the doubles point. However, the Bobcats rallied by winning five of six singles matches.
Against BYU, the Cougars swept all six singles matches in straight sets. MSU’s only victory of the day came at No. 1 doubles, where Jakub Dybala and Pawel Turzanski posted an 8-6 win over BYU’s top tandem.
On Friday evening, MSU gave the Utes all they could handle, before dropping the contest after wins at the top two spots.
The Bobcats lost the opening doubles point and trailed 3-0 following losses at No. 5 and 6 singles. MSU’S Corey Smith posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 to close the gap. Fletcher Keyes’ three-set loss to John Taylor gave Utah the match.
MSU concluded its scoring as Dybala won at No. 1 singles over UU’s Wes Hancock 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. Turzanski dropped the final match in a three-set thriller, including an 11-9 loss in a third set tiebreaker.
Montana State will host Portland State on Saturday in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
