MSU Spring Football Update

The calendar said March, which almost made the whole thing feel like an April Fools Day joke.
But Rob Ash had no second thoughts about starting MSU’s spring drills during an early-spring cold snap, when temperatures dipped as low as the teens and snow removed Bobcat Stadium’s artificial surface circled the field.
“I’m glad we started when we did,” Ash said. “We got some work done. I wish we would have gotten one more practice in, but I’m pleased with what we were able to accomplish.”
Montana State completed two practices, postponing the third due to the cold and wind. The team will make up the missed practice when drills resume after spring break.
Ash said the Big Sky’s best defense in 2008 had a mid-season feel in the first week. “The defense played fast. They are experienced and talented, and they looked like it. The passing game was a little behind, but a lot of that was because of the defense and the weather.”
After last week’s two practices, the Bobcats get a week off for spring break next week.
One facet of MSU’s first week of spring drills that pleased all involved was the players’ physical condition. “The guys are in really good shape to start the spring,” said MSU strength coach Doug Samuelson. “We gained a lot of strength and explosiveness.”
Samuelson indicated the Bobcats broke 10 strength records in pre-spring testing. In addition, “Our 10th-fastest (40-yard dash) time this year would have been our fourth-fastest last year,” he said.
Samuelson also indicated that rehabilitation continues successfully for players who underwent off-season surgery.
