Bobcats Chop 'Jacks; Move on to Big Sky Semifinals

Garcia connected on eight-of-16 from the field, including her second 3-pointer of the season. In a addition, the 6-foot-2 forward added six steals, three blocks and two assists.
Despite Garcia’s presence, it was freshman Katie Bussey who provided the spark down the stretch. Bussey broke open a 57-all tie with 6:45 remaining with eight straight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Bobcats a 65-59 advantage MSU would not relinquish.
The 5-foot-9 guard from Alamosa, Colo., was tabbed the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year on Tuesday.
“All season we have had different players step-up,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “Tonight, we got a solid effort from our starting line-up. It was a great team win.”
Also hitting double-figures for Montana State (15-14) was Bussey 13, Erica Perry 13, Sarah Strand 12 and Anne Phippard 10
Montana State (15-14) raced out to an early 14-6 lead, but Northern Arizona countered with ten unanswered points. The lead changed hands two more times, before Garcia’s triple with 1:15 left in the half to give MSU a 39-28 advantaqge.
The Bobcats entered intermission with a 39-33 advantage.
In the second stanza, the lead changed hands four times before Bussey’s heroics sealed the victory.
Northern Arizona (9-21) was forced to foul down the stretch and the Bobcats went nine-of-ten from the line to put the game away.
NAU was paced in the loss by Lauren Hoisington with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
“We did a nice job down the stretch,” Binford said. “Northern Arizona had given us fits during the regular-season, so I’m very proud of the way the kids prepared and were focused for this game.”
The Bobcats will face No. 2 seed Portland State, Friday at 5:35 p.m. in Dahlberg Arena.
