MSU Shines at Mountain States Invite

The Bobcat women recorded 12 new season best performances and had two new conference qualifiers; Amy Plummer in the pole vault and Elisabeth Driscoll (life best) in the 3000 race. Driscoll, an all-conference performer in cross-country, placed second in the 3000 with an altitude-adjusted time of 10:01.19. Plummer went 12’0” in the pole vault, beating her previous best by almost a foot.
“It was the best Mountain State games in 28 years for us,” head coach Dale Kennedy said. “We’ve always taken a setback down there. I thought we overcame a long tradition of sub par performances and did some pretty good things.”
“I just look at the number of season bests they all got and it is a great adjustment for our kids on the road,” Kennedy said. “They are really motivated right now because of the good weekend.”
Freshman Heather Haug ran a season best in 800 pushing her to the top of the event on the Bobcat squad. Haug and Driscoll led the MSU women to a second place in the women’s distance medley as well.
The women’s throwing contingent dominated the shot put event with Kris Shaffer first, Allison Jones second and Amanda Murphy fifth. Murphy won the women’s weight throw with a mark of 54’10”. Jones placed third in the weight throw.
Current NCAA indoor champ Ellie Rudy came one notch closer to breaking the 13-foot barrier with a pole vault of 12’11.75” to win the event and maintain the lead in the conference best performances.
Devin McDowell qualified in the 5000 with an altitude-adjusted run of 15:18.17. He was one of two new qualifications for the conference meet on the men’s side. The other, Nick Morrow, placed sixth in the men’s pole vault and reached a conference-qualifying height of 16’0.
Freshman Nick Puckett ran his fastest 200 in trials at 22.43 and placed fourth in the event. He also had a lifetime best in the 400 and won the event with a time of 48.65. Nick Atwood’s 3000 time missed an NCAA provisional mark by one second. He won the invitational event with an altitude adjusted time of 8:09.90. The distance contingent was also led by redshirt freshman Patrick Casey’s performance in the mile of 4:08.42.
“Casey’s mile time that was unprecedented for a freshman,” Kennedy said. “That time would be the second best in the Big Sky if he was running as a qualifier.”
The Bobcats host Weber State and Montana this Friday at the Fleet Feet Dual Invite.
