Lady Griz Claw out Win over Bobcat Women

“We can take a lot of positives away from this game,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We met every one of our goals in the first half, and, for the game, we held them to 35 percent from the field and matched them in rebounding.”
Montana State (9-12, 3-6) built a 22-15 lead at the 7:32 mark of the opening stanza following a Nubia Garcia jumper. The Bobcats entered intermission with a 30-27 advantage.
MSU was sparked in the first half by Garcia and freshman Katie Bussey, who posted nine points apiece, including three 3-pointers by Bussey.
Montana (19-4, 8-1) opened the second period on an 8-2 run to stake a 35-32 lead at the 16:48 mark on a pair of Lauren Beck free throws.
The Bobcats answered with six consecutive points, including a three-pointer by Erica Perry to give MSU a 38-35 lead.
Montana State then went cold from the field, going scoreless over the next four-minutes and thirty-seconds as Montana built a 46-38 margin with 11:36 left on a Jessa Linford layin.
Again, MSU responded with a 10-1 run to reclaim the lead at 48-47 on a Garcia put back with 8:13 remaining. The lead changed hands five times, before a Linford jumper at the 5:34 mark gave the Lady Griz the lead for good.
The Bobcats trailed 60-59 with 1:48 left on a Jenny Heringer jumper, but the Lady Griz converted seven-of-eight free throws in the waning moments to secure the victory.
“I thought we handled their defense pretty well,” Binford said. “But their zone down the stretch really gave us fits.”
Montana State had three players in double-figures led by Garcia with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Also in double-digits were Bussey 15 and Perry 10. Bussey ended the contest hitting five-of-nine three-pointers.
UM was guided by Mandy Morales with 17 points, while Sarah Ena added 14, Beck 12, and Rogers 11.
The Bobcats shot 38 percent from the field, while holding the Lady Griz to 35 percent. UM also held a commanding edge in free throws connecting on 24-of-32, while MSU hit six-of-nine.
Montana State will host Northern Arizona on Thursday, Feb. 12, in Worthington Arena.
