In their last 10 games the Montana State women’s basketball team has gone to overtime on four occasions. Heading into last weekend, the Bobcats were on the wrong end of three of those decisions. On Saturday, Montana State finally had an overtime and road breakthrough, as it upset league-leading Portland State 94-90 in the Stott Center. MSU is currently 9-11 overall and 3-5 in Big Sky action. The win over the Vikings put the Bobcats back in the hunt for a conference tournament berth. Montana State is tied for fifth in the league. Also gaining from the MSU win over PSU was rival Montana, who had lost to Portland State on Thursday. MSU’s victory, coupled with a UM win over Eastern Washington put the Lady Griz back into a tie for first place atop the standings. Montana is currently 18-4 and 7-1 in BSC action.
That Was The Week That Was:
The Bobcats beat Portland State 94-90 in overtime, paced by Erica Perry’s career 27 points, Saturday afternoon. Perry converted 12-of-22 from the field and added three assists and three steals. Trailing 90-89 in overtime, Perry gathered up a loose ball and converted a layup to give MSU the lead for good. Following a Bobcat timeout, freshman Katie Bussey nailed a jumper as the shot clock expired to give the ‘Cats a 93-90 advantage. Jenny Heringer’s free throw with 17-seconds left secured the win. The win was MSU’s first overtime victory in four tries, and snapped a nine-game road losing streak. On Thursday, Eastern Washington held a commanding 48-28 advantage in rebounding and connected on 13 3-pointers, en route to a 90-75 win. EWU entered intermission with a 42-39 cushion. The Eagels opened the second stanza with an 11-3 run taking a 53-42 lead at the 16:37 mark. MSU closed to within 55-50 on a Lyndi Seidensticker free throw, but EWU rattled off a 21-9 stretch to put the game away. The ‘Cats were led by Katie Bussey with a career 20 points, while Erica Perry added 17 and Nubia Garcia 13.
Dialing Long Distance:
Montana State has converted 125 3-pointers this season. As a team, the Bobcats are shooting 36 percent from beyond the arc. Six MSU players have tallied 13 treys or better on the year- led by Jenny Heringer with 31 3-pointers and followed by Sarah Strand 25, Kaite Bussey 23, Anne Phippard 19, Lyndi Seidensticker 18 and Erica Perry 13.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I from 2005-06 to 06-07, improving 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign to 13-16 in 06-07. Last year, the Bobcats moved up again posting its first winning season under Tricia Binford’s tutelage with an 18-13 mark and an 11-5 Big Sky slate. The 2007-08 season culminated with a trip to the league title game for the first time since 2003.
To Catch A Thief:
Last year, Montana State finished second in the Big Sky in steals per game led by Erica Perry, who ended the season ranked 30th in the nation at 2.8 per contest. So far this winter, MSU is averaging 7.40 per game.
‘Cat Chat:
For the third consecutive year the Montana State women’s basketball team ranked among the nation’s finest in terms of academics. After ranking fourth in the country in 2006-07, MSU again found themselves listed in the upper echelon- listed in the top 15 with an overall team cumulative grade-point average of 3.392...Aside from their achievements on the court and in the classroom, the Bobcats enjoyed success at the ticket window. Montana State posted the fourth highest increase in attendance from the previous year at the NCAA Division I level. MSU averaged 3,035 fans last winter- an increase from 1,791 in 2006-07...The Bobcats finished 2007-08 with an 18-13 record and an 11-5 Big Sky Conference slate. After upsetting Idaho State in the semifinals at the league tournament, Montana State played in its first Big Sky championship game since 2003. The Bobcats also defeated every Big Sky team last season, a feat they last accomplished in 2002-03...MSU finished the 2007-08 season ranked 27th in the nation in scoring (73.2) and 28th in free throw percentage (75.1). The Bobcats were led by senior first-team All-Big Sky performer Rebecca Mercer, who averaged 18.4 points per game and 2.69 treys. MSU returns 57 percent of its offense this season, including top returning scorer Sarah Strand, who averaged 9.7 points per game.
Bobcat Player of the Week:
Erica Perry was the key cog in the Big Sky’s biggest upset of the season, as the Bobcats beat previously undefeated Portland State 94-90 in overtime at the Stott Center. Against PSU, Perry had a career-high 27 points on 12-of-22 from the field. She also added three assists, three steals, two rebounds and a block. Sixteen of Perry’s points came in the second half and overtime. Her steal and layup at the 1:44 mark of overtime gave MSU the lead for good. On Thursday at E. Washington, Perry notched 17 points on 7-of-11 from the field. Perry averaged 22 points, three assists, three steals and two rebounds per game, while shooting 58 percent, last week.
