Bobcat Netters Host Three; Women Hit the Road

The Montana State tennis teams will both be in action this weekend. The MSU men will host three matches in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center, beginning with Lewis-Clark State on Friday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. LC-State is currently ranked No. 17 in this week’s NAIA Top 25 poll. The Bobcats will conclude play on Friday night at 6 p.m., when it meets Seattle University, who is presently transitioning to NCAA Division I status. MSU will finish the weekend against MSU Billings, Saturday at 6 p.m. The Bobcat women will travel to the Inland Empire where it will face Gonzaga in Spokane on Friday at 7 p.m. (MST), before meeting Big Sky Conference rival Eastern Washington, Saturday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m. (MST) in Cheney, Wash.
That Was The Week That Was:
The Montana State men’s tennis team went 2-2 on its New Mexico road trip, last weekend. The Bobcats opened play with a 7-0 loss to #75 New Mexico State. MSU’s lone win of the match came at No. 1 doubles, where Jakub Dybala and Pawel Turzanski posted a 9-8 victory over No. 52-ranked Roman Stoisavljevic and Eduardo Salas. On Friday, Montana State defeated Texas-Pan American, 4-3, as Dybala, Turzanski and David Kovas all posted victories in singles play. The Bobcats also won the doubles point at Nos. 1 and 2. MSU continued its winning way with a 4-3 decision over Idaho. Posting singles wins were Turzanski, Fletcher Keyes and Alberto Fuentes. The Bobcats concluded play with a 7-0 setback to No. 44 New Mexico on Sunday.
Bobcat Player of the Week:
Sophomore Pawel Turzanski was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for his efforts on MSU’s New Mexico road trip. In singles action, the native of Lodz, Poland posted a 2-2 mark, winning at No. 3 against Idaho and Texas-Pan American. He suffered a straight set loss at No. 2 versus New Mexico State and a hard-fought three-set setback to #44 New Mexico. Turzanski combined with Jakub Dyabla at the top doubles position, where the duo notched a 3-1 mark, including a 9-8 decision over New Mexico State’s top duo of Roman Stoisavljevic and Eduardo Salas, who were ranked No. 52 in the nation.
Jasper Ranked:
Montana State’s No. 1 singles player Stephanie Jasper was ranked 30th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Central Region preseason poll. The ranking is a first for a MSU women’s player.
‘Cat Chat:
Junior transfer Corey Smith, who was ranked 82nd in the ITA Preseason poll, fell out the top 100 this week. He had become only the second Bobcat ever ranked in the top 100. Smith joined Federico Ueltschi, who earned his highest ranking of 58 in 2004...Sophomore Pawel Turzanski is ranked 23rd in the Mountain Region...The MSU men have won four Big Sky titles- 2000, 2004, 2005, and 2006.
