Bobcats Drop OT Heartbreaker at UCSB

UC Santa Barbara hit three of its five field goal attempts in overtime, holding Montana State to 0-for-6 shooting in the extra period, in a 78-71 Gaucho win over the Bobcats on Saturday in Santa Barbara's Thunderdome.
Divaldo Mbunga converted a layup 16 seconds into the game, and Montana State never trailed until a Chris Devine three-point play with 4:08 left and a pair of James Nunnally free throws at the 2:54 mark gave the Gauchos their first lead. With 2:32 to play, Branden Johnson hit a three-pointer to tie the game, then followed with a layup to give MSU the lead.
With 1:04 to play, Marquis Navarre converted a three-point play to give MSU a 67-62 lead. UCSB's Jordan Weiner hit a three-pointer on the next possession, and Nunnally's putback with 26 seconds left sent the game to overtime.
After MSU took a 71-69 lead on the strength of a pair of free throws by both Mbunga and Will Bynum, the Bobcats failed to score again. Chris Devine tied the game with a second-chance jumper, then Nunnally converted a pair of free throws. Devine's jumper gave UCSB a 75-71 lead with 35 seconds to play, and the Gauchos converted three-of-four charity tosses in the final seconds to seal the win.
Montana State falls to 12-13 with the loss, MSU's first in overtime against three wins this season, while UCSB moves to 12-13. MSU faces a grueling conclusion to the regular season, traveling to Portland State Wednesday and Northern Colorado Sunday for crucial league road tilts, before finishing at home against Weber State on March 3.
